Palm Springs Coloured Door Guide

During a recent trip to California, we made sure that we allowed enough time to overnight in the desert oasis that is Palm Springs. Our plan was simply to cruise the palm tree-lined streets and check out all the mid-century homes and their eye-catching coloured doors.

Personally, when I plan a holiday I always try to squeeze as much in as possible and this usually means that everything needs to run according to plan in order to ensure that no crucial must-see sights go unseen. So instead of arriving and not knowing where to begin like us, I decided that while we were driving around exploring, I would note down what we found and where so that when I returned home I could create a map which outlines exactly where to find all the colourful doors and unique homes in this stunning town.

However, if you're a photographer like me and still in the early stages of planning your trip to Palm Springs, another tool you can use to explore the streets before even arriving is google maps. Had you thought of that? Drag that little golden man down onto the road and take a small tour well before you even arrive. This will ensure you don't miss a thing.

But if you haven't got time for that or simply can't be bothered, I don't really blame you. It's a lot easier to simply use our map and go from there, we have included some of best bits anyway, even where to find that Insta famous pink Palm Springs door.

The first street that we happened to stumble upon was Kings Rd W. If you're looking for coloured doors, this is a great place to start. Just about every house which lines the street has a coloured door. If you're driving along E Murray Canyon Dr looking for Kings Rd W, there is a good chance you will drive right past it because it tends to look more like an entrance to an old retirement village rather than a street.

After leaving Kings Rd W we turned off onto S Camino Real, most of the homes shown below are either located on this street or one of the six streets which run off it. Don't worry, you won't get lost, most of the streets which turn off S Camino Real just loop back onto it or are dead-end streets. The homes are dotted sparsely throughout the streets here, so you'll just have to drive slowly and keep an eye out.

This next image is probably one of my favourites from the afternoon! As we were driving along S Camino Real, I happened to pull up just before the sun dipped below the back side of the mountain. Just in time to catch that gorgeous soft golden light as it cascaded across the hills and down onto the home. Their door was also a personal favourite!

If your main priority is that Insta famous pink door, you will find it when you turn off S Camino Real and onto E Sierra Way. The owners of the home with the pink door do have signs up which request that photos not be taken, so if you want a photo here, try to respect the wishes/privacy of the owners and take it from the car or the other side of the street. It's probably not a good idea to go walking up to the door or rolling around on their grass for those Instagram shots. Think about how frequently they would have that kind of thing happening.

The following morning I headed back out for a new area, armed with some new information after speaking with a staff member at the hotel. Vista Las Palmas is a nice area located at the other end of the town. The streets in-between N Via Monte Vista and N Rose Ave are where you will find all the other beautiful homes shown below. Here you will also find Elvis Presley's Honeymoon Hideaway.

The first map shown below corresponds to the first half of this article (day 1) and the second map corresponds to the second half of the article (day 2). Even though we have provided you with some key maps to help give you a head start if you have the time, it always pays to do some exploring of your own.. after all, you never know what you may find!
Tip - If you're visiting solely to take photos of the homes, a home/door which doesn't have nice light in the morning may look better in the afternoon and could be worth re-visiting!
